iRacing is known as the most expensive racing simulator out there, and with good reason: it is the most expensive.
How much it actually costs you is heavily dependent on how you use it, so it is difficult to generalise. However, I will breakdown what I have spent on iRacing over the last 2.5 years to give you some idea.
There are two separate costs involved with iRacing: the annual subscription and the cost of additional content.
I have purchased 7 cars and 27 tracks. By far my largest cost has been for tracks, mainly because I started out wanting to do road racing and then decided to try oval racing. This pretty much doubles the number of tracks you need to buy.
Here is a breakdown of what I have spent so far.
Total Money Spent over 2.5 years
Additional Content: $488.81
Total Spend: $758.94
Average Cost Per Year: $303.58
However, this really doesn't tell the whole story as you are going to pay a lot more in the beginning as you need to build up your content so that you can race. As a result, the annual cost actually comes down over time. Here is a breakdown of what I have spent each year. I didn't buy an annual subscription until 6 months in, so I will start with my first two 3 month subscription periods. All costs include tax and any discounts received for multi-buy and participation credits.
Note that my first 3 months would only have cost me a total of $5.74 had I just stayed racing in Rookie Class. It was my choice to move up to D-Class racing in June (less than 2 months in) which required the purchase of more content. I earned the licence class so I wanted to use it and I was keen to start racing open-wheelers.
